Developing ideas

This was my first go at making a spaceship it was suppose to be similar to Naboo fighter of star wars I picked this idea to model because it was easy to design. Using basic 3d objects I constructed the model and finished by turning the 3d models into Editable Mesh’s and Extruding them to get the right shape. I also had a go at texturing, and instead of texturing a single object I learnt how to select and texture areas. I imported textures from the Internet as bitmap textures and dragged and dropped them through 3Ds Max texture menu.

My second design of a spaceship was completely accidental I started off with a 20 segmented sphere and I then began to Extrude the sphere until it began to take shape, I then instant copied the model and attached both objects. On this model I placed a bend modifier on the wings.

My final design that I will animate, this was more of a complex design I created two halves and attached them together I then achieved more detail by creating extra bits such as guns, engines, etc; from 3d objects. I then went and used a bend modifier on the front of the ship to give it a unique look.

I also wanted a force field. And I created this by copying the ship and giving it a texture and then turning down the opacity and finally enlarging it I also put a lens effect on that texture using a glow.

Before the completion of my force field I created the below. I did this in the same way but the texture went on a sphere and there was also the introduction of an external power generating the force field which also has a glow lens effect.

Level of detail???

Level of detail is a technique in which objects are classed by importance so objects with less importance will have less detail meaning less polygons, this allows more detail to be added to more essential objects. Another way of using this technique would be like fogging, so this would include objects further away having less detail than objects closer. Level of detail is essential because too much detail, can affect the animation, because there is too much going through the pipeline, so this technique reduces down the amount the pipeline processes. This technique is used to limit the amount of polygons on screen at one time as there are sometimes restrictions.

For example; In this game the important objects are the characters the camera is following, the crowd in the background are not as important but are there
too add more realism to the game, so if you were to get closer to the crowd, you will notice that the level of detail is considerably less compared to your character.

Enterpise Day

Well last week we were dragged into college for "Wider Key Skills" in the form of a dragons den event set up by Bradford enterprise. It was completely rigged as first they handed out the teacher resource paper with all the answers on it to every table, not only that but they were prizes for the best team, which everyone seemed to have 27 right answers out of a total of 25. And the only thing we won during this time was a fricking twirl to share between 5 people. Even though our team got every question right, well we were cheating but we didn't expect everyone else to be as well. We were split into groups games being split into two groups of 5 and there were at least 20 other groups including business, now you would expect the business groups to be pretty good at this stuff, but everyone was shit apart from games, I don't know why but everyone was stupid and had no imagination.

So let me explain, we had to think of an idea that we could promote and sell, our team "Kamikazes" idea was an event were we would sell flowers and herbs in the form of seeds and fully grown plants, we dubbed this event "Flower Power". Our evil counterparts "Aspects" came up with the idea "Hippy Shakes" were they would have organic smoothies powered by a bicycle. Now we came second and the other team came first, the pize was a fiver each as outdated coupons. Just goes to show the brilliance of games design department and just ensures me that everyother group is poo.
